Emotion-detecting tech should be restricted by law-AI Now

Leading technology and research firm in the US working on technology that can interpret human emotions like sorrow and joy has asked the authorities to make new laws to ban the use of technology as of now.

AI Now Institute has been working on the technology for many years and has already built systems that can understand human emotions through facial expressions. But this sector still has to improve further in order to be more usable and beneficial for mankind.

These technologies are already in place to identify suspects of a crime for any signs of deception or set insurance prices for a human by correctly determining the age of a person by their facial features.

But the Institute wants to ban the use of the technology that makes decisions in people’s lives or determine their access to opportunities as it feels that technology has to be upgraded further before it should be put to use. The institute has found support from a UK based company that is building its own emotional response technologies.

It says in its annual report that the sector is currently undergoing a period of exponential growth and could already worth around $20 billion.

Co-founder of AI Now and professor Kate Crawford said that the technology can read our inner emotional states, interpret the micro-expressions on our face, recognise us by the tone of our voice and also identify us by the way we walk.

But at the same time as these technologies are being integrated into various sectors to make life easier for us there is enough evidence to prove that people always do not have the same emotions or the same facial looks on the same emotions.

Professor Crawford said that the complexity lies in the fact that there are various types of emotions and relating them to the facial features is not that easy.
