Elon Musk Announces Plans For First Tesla Factory In Europe

In an official announcement on Tuesday, Elon Musk—CEO, Tesla, Inc—said that Tesla is going to have its next “Gigafactory” along with engineering and design center at Berlin, Germany. The Gigafactory, Berlin will be Tesla’s first European factory. According to the sources, Berlin was never the first choice for Gigafactory. But current affairs in Europe due to Brexit forced the U.S.-based automotive company to shift the previously chosen factory location to Berlin from United Kingdom (U.K.).

Currently, Tesla has 3 Gigafactory facilities from which two of them are situated in US—Gigafactory 1 as a battery plant, Sparks, Nevada and Gigafactory 2 as power electronics and charging equipment production factory, Buffalo, New York—and remaining one—Gigafactory 3 as car manufacturing plant—is situated at Shanghai, China which has recently got approval for starting mass production from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China. The proposed Gigafactory 4, Berlin, Germany will be used for production of Model 3 electric sedans as well as a crossover SUV Model Y, according to Tesla.

Elon Musk praised German engineering for its previous outstanding contributions in global automobile industry in an award ceremony held at the Axel-Springer-Haus, Berlin. Musk was awarded with a prestigious “Golden Steering Wheel Award (Das Goldene Lenkrad)” by Bild, Axel Springer. He further added that, Tesla is planning to build an n engineering and design center here so that the company will be benefitted with the best artistic innovations that Berlin is famous for.

As per the talks, Tesla has considered a location nearby the new airport in Berlin. Tesla looks forward to complete the construction faster and launch the Gigafactory soon. The factory will be beneficial move for Tesla by avoiding volatile tariffs and trades as well as complexions in importing the cars from the states to Europe.

Despite having a slowdown in regional car market, Tesla managed to increase the sales throughout last three quarters of this year.
